Giving

The other day, I was thinking of how much influence our parents have on us. It reminded me that as I was growing up, the one thing that hit my head all the time was that my parent’s could give away anything!!!! I am glad they never gave us away!!!! I mean it was that bad! – Good!!!

It used to pain me for some reason. Most of all, my mum. She would share all our delicacies with people and when visitors logged in at home, we almost had to beg her not to give way the cakes, sausages, pancakes and the like. But since she knew we were mean little brats children, she would wait for me to serve some tea and then declare in the presence of visitors…please serve us pancakes too or did some queen cakes remain? I was brought up in the village and these things were rare-so giving them out....no no no...!!

My dad!! He is a super giver, to date, if I were to tell my dad I am in need right now, he would beg, steal or borrow. When I was a little, I remember overhearing a conversation. This woman was narrating to my mum how her friend (an old lady that my mum did not know) had saved all her pennies to buy a 1/4kg of meat. When the old lady went to buy the long-awaited meat, my dad happened to have been queuing behind her, so when she asked for her meat, my dad was moved with compassion and told the butcher, please give her 1kg and I will pay.  The old lady must have been moved to tears…or so I imagine.

Not long ago, I was in a supermarket, and a lady who was queuing before me, paid for all her goodies but the money was not enough, so she asked the cashier to return the bread. I quickly jumped in and said, please give her back the bread, I will pay for it.Well, to be honest, I could see this lady was from some nearby slum, she bought some soap, a little cooking oil and she must have longed to have some bread too, may be for her children, but her pennies were not enough.

Well, guess what? We learn a lot from our parents! I hope our kids and learning great stuff from us! I thank God; my parent’s taught me how to give and i am still learning more! My husband now complains that I give away too much-even what deserves to be sold!

  1. What a blessing to hear of a child taking after her father -- and her Heavenly Father! May your children take after their parents, too.
